Taking PLA as an example, improper storage or exposure to high humidity (70%+) can lead to noticeable adhesion issues. The moisture in the filament will boil and turn into steam during extrusion, causing bubbles in the print. You may hear popping, and crackling sounds, or see steam, which not only affects print quality but can also damage the extruder. This problem is even more pronounced with hygroscopic filaments. In typical cases, a single print job can last from a few hours to several dozen hours. Therefore, when printing in humid environments like garages, a filament dryer becomes even more important.

Once the filament is removed from a sealed bag, moisture begins to seep in over time. If the filament is stored in a damp place or exposed to air, it must be dried. Wet filament can ruin the print quality (print failure). On the other hand, dry filament greatly improves the success rate, ensuring the best quality prints with smooth, delicate, clean, and neat surfaces, free from visible stringing.

Fortunately, there is a machine that can remove moisture from filament: the filament dryer. It not only stores the filament but can also dry it when needed.
