3D printing filaments are hygroscopic, meaning they naturally absorb moisture from the surrounding air. When stored improperly or exposed to high humidity, filament can absorb water over time, which may negatively affect print quality.
Taking PLA as an example, even though it is less moisture-sensitive than materials like Nylon or TPU, prolonged exposure to humid environments can still cause printing issues. During extrusion, moisture trapped inside the filament can rapidly evaporate, leading to:
- Popping or crackling sounds from the nozzle
- Increased stringing
- Bubbles or rough surface texture
- Inconsistent extrusion
- Reduced layer adhesion
For highly hygroscopic materials such as Nylon, TPU, PVA, and PC, proper drying becomes even more important. Moist filament can significantly reduce print reliability and make it difficult to achieve smooth, accurate, and consistent results.
Once filament is removed from a sealed bag, it gradually begins absorbing moisture from the environment. In humid conditions, even properly stored filament may eventually require drying before printing.
A filament dryer uses controlled heat and airflow to remove moisture from the filament. Unlike simple storage boxes with desiccants, a dryer actively restores filament condition by reducing absorbed moisture before or during printing.
